In the Puerto Rican tradition of Cabezudos (bighead), where a distinguished and appreciated individual is honored with a larger-than-life sculpted replica of their head, the Bomba and Plana community wanted to recognize Juan “Juango” Gutiérrez for the intellectual and emotional support he has provided since he gave himself to the task of offering cultural programs in our area of the diaspora.
Gutiérrez’ Cabezón was presented at the culmination of the day’s festivities of the 2018 Bomplenazo in the lobby of Hostos Center for Arts & Culture, where he was caught completely by surprise. As is the case with most Puerto Rican celebrations, all attendees just jumped into the fray and cheered on in delight as art and life in what must have been a surreal—but well-deserved moment—for the long-time ambassador of the musical genre.
Note: The Cabezón is the creation of Garwin José Zamora Sánchez! The video was shot by LP21 board member, Edwin Pagán.
